A VPS is a virtual private server: you get guaranteed resources (CPU cores, memory, disk) and full root access. On shared hosting, resources are split among many sites; on a VPS they are yours. That makes a VPS a good fit for busy websites, bots, VPNs, Docker, and your own services.
Start from the task. A light website, VPN, or bot is usually fine with 1 core and 1–2 GB of RAM. For busier apps, databases, and Docker, use 2–4 cores and 4–8 GB. Size the disk to your data, preferably NVMe. Set the parameters in the calculator and it will sort the fitting plans.
