How much RAM does a VPS need?

Memory is usually the first resource a VPS runs out of, so sizing RAM well matters more than chasing extra cores. Here are practical targets by workload.

RAM is usually the bottleneck

On most virtual servers, you hit a memory wall long before you run short of CPU. When RAM fills up, the system starts swapping to disk, latency climbs, and the server feels sluggish even though processor usage looks fine. That is why sizing memory to the workload is the single most useful decision you make, and why our VPS selection checklist starts from the task rather than the price.

The right way to estimate is to name what the server runs, roughly how many concurrent users or requests it handles, and whether the software is memory-heavy. A small static site and a busy database with the same traffic have wildly different memory needs, so the workload — not the visitor count alone — sets the target.

Targets by workload

As a rough guide: a static site, a personal project, or a small chat bot runs comfortably on 1–2 GB. A typical WordPress site or small web app wants 2–4 GB once caching and a database are in play. A production database or a busy store is happier at 4–8 GB and up, and a database-heavy workload benefits from both more memory and fast NVMe storage.

Compute-heavy jobs shift the picture. A game server often cares more about single-thread CPU speed and low latency than raw memory, while AI inference can demand large amounts of RAM (or a GPU) regardless of traffic. When in doubt, the calculator maps a task straight to a sensible size.

Leave headroom, then measure

Whatever number you land on, add a margin. Operating systems cache aggressively, traffic spikes, and updates temporarily need extra room, so a server that sits at 90% memory during normal load has nothing left for a busy hour. Aiming to run around 60–70% of capacity at peak gives you a comfortable buffer without paying for memory you never touch.

The best sizing is measured, not guessed. Launch on a plan that fits your estimate, watch real memory use for a week or two, and resize once you have data. Most providers let you scale up with little downtime, so it is usually cheaper to start reasonable and grow than to over-provision from day one.
