How server location affects speed and latency
Where your server physically sits has a direct effect on how fast it feels to your users. A little understanding of latency goes a long way when choosing a region.
Latency is distance plus network quality
Latency is the time it takes a request to travel to the server and back, and it is bounded by physics: the farther the data has to go, the longer each round trip takes. Network quality and peering matter too, which is why major hubs such as Ashburn, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Singapore tend to feel fast — they are densely interconnected.
For interactive sites and apps, every extra round trip adds up, so hosting near your audience is one of the cheapest performance wins available.
Choose a region by where your users are
The simplest rule is to place the server close to most of your users. A US audience is well served from a US region, a European audience from a hub like Frankfurt or Amsterdam, and an Asian audience from Singapore, Tokyo, or Hong Kong depending on the market. If your users cluster in one country, a server in that country can trim latency further.

Use a CDN for a global audience
If your users are spread across the world, no single location serves everyone equally. A content delivery network caches static assets in many locations, so images, scripts, and files load from a point near each visitor while your VPS handles the dynamic parts. This combination gives most global sites a fast experience without running servers in every region.
