VPS vs shared hosting vs dedicated: which to pick

Shared hosting, a VPS, and a dedicated server sit on a ladder of control and performance. Knowing where your project belongs on that ladder makes the choice straightforward.

Shared hosting

On shared hosting, many websites live on one server and split its resources. It is inexpensive and managed for you, which makes it a fine starting point for small brochure sites and low-traffic blogs. The trade-offs are limited control, no root access, and performance that can dip when a neighbor on the same server gets busy.

A VPS

A VPS gives you a guaranteed slice of a server with full root access, so you can install any software and tune the environment. It offers much better isolation and predictable performance than shared hosting, at a modest step up in cost and responsibility, since you manage updates, security, and backups yourself.

For most growing projects, applications, bots, game servers, and small stores, a VPS is the sweet spot: enough power and control without the price of a whole machine.

A dedicated server

A dedicated server is an entire physical machine reserved for you. It delivers maximum and fully consistent performance and is the right choice for heavy, sustained workloads or strict isolation requirements. It also costs the most and, like a VPS, leaves the administration to you.

A useful rule of thumb: start where your workload sits today, and move up a rung only when you consistently hit the limits of the current tier. Many projects run happily on a VPS for a long time.
